DOD Office Complex Receives Top Honors at the 33rd Annual Design Awards Program Event in Washington D.C.
Catellus Development Group, a ProLogis (NYSE:PLD) company specializing in mixed-use development, announced today that its Los Angeles Air Force Base project in California has been recognized by the United States Air Force Design Awards Program for excellence in design and construction.
Catellus, which served as master developer for the project, along with its partner Kearny Real Estate Company and Nadel Architects, have received the Honor Award in "Facility Design" for the development of the SAMS (Systems Acquisition Management and Support) Complex located there. The SAMS Complex is a state-of-the-art, Department of Defense-specified office environment comprising 545,000 square feet of space. The award was presented during the 33rd USAF Annual Design Awards Program ceremony held in Washington, D.C.
"For over three decades, the USAF Design Awards Program has been an effective way for the Air Force to communicate and recognize outstanding construction and design excellence at military complexes worldwide," said Dave Duncan, the USAF Design Awards Program manager. "The SAMS Complex is aesthetically pleasing and technically efficient; it incorporates design elements and materials that complement the surrounding buildings and utilizes sustainable technologies and features that reduce energy consumption and maximize workplace comfort. As we continually strive for superior and innovative facility designs, I congratulate Catellus, Kearny and Nadel Architects for their accomplishments at Los Angeles Air Force Base in California."
"We are deeply honored to receive this prestigious award," said Mike Englhard, senior vice president for Catellus. "Catellus has extensive experience transforming former military installations and government facilities into mixed-use developments and commercial and retail districts. The resounding success of this project is truly testament to the strong collaboration we achieved with the Air Force, city of El Segundo and our partners, and we are extremely proud of this designation."
"We could not have achieved this level of design excellence without the entire team's commitment to doing what was in the best interest of the project," said Nadel project director David Jacobson. "Catellus fostered a spirit of collaboration amongst all parties that is reflected in the quality of the finished project."
Established in 1976, the winners of the USAF Design Awards Program are selected by a panel of nine judges who evaluate entries based on seven project award categories, including Planning Studies and Design Guides, Sustainable Design, Concept Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Facility Design and Military Family Housing.
Completion of the Los Angeles Air Force Base project, which spans 98 acres near the LAX airport, marks the first time in U.S. history for a developer to deliver a brand new military complex in exchange for government-owned property. Today, the site consists of the award-winning SAMS Complex and 60 acres of land designated for the development of more than 900 single-family residential units, of which 400 have already been built.
