On Wednesday, the Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas was named the first hospital to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's highest award, making it officially one of the greenest hospitals in the world. The nonprofit council's Leadership in Environmental Energy & Design rating system provides a benchmark for environmentally friendly buildings worldwide.

Officials at the Dell hospital said Wednesday that it received a platinum rating and is the only hospital to do so. Previously, only office buildings achieved such a ranking.

Because of their waste containment and equipment needs, hospitals are notorious energy wasters, Dell Children's CEO Robert Bonar said . The hospital had to be designed with the standards in mind to receive the ranking, he said.

"We're very proud, and happy for the kids we take care of," Bonar said. "It's just a monumental achievement," Mayor Will Wynn said. "It aligns perfectly with Austin's attitudes and raises the bar in town."
